Finding Refuge in His Presence
“He who dwells in the shelter
of the Most High will abide
in the shadow of the Almighty.”
We all long for safety and stability in life. We seek it in our jobs, our financial situations, and our families. All these things can give us a sense of peace at times, but when we face uncertainty, it’s easy to give in to fear of what the future holds.
Where can we look for peace in the midst of the storms that life brings us? We need the constant reminder that God is our refuge in times of trouble (2 Samuel 22:3).
One way I’ve learned to overcome fear is by taking “every thought captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5) and fixing my mind on who God is. Growing up, there were many nights where I would wake up afraid. I would easily allow my mind to race through all the terrible things that could happen to me. In those moments, my parents would read Psalm 91 to me, where it speaks of God as “my refuge and my fortress.” Over the years, I repeated this verse to myself until I immersed myself in the truth that God is my shelter and protection, and that He is always with me in times of trouble.
The Lord never promised to remove all hardship from our lives, but He did promise to be with us. Jesus reminded His disciples of this, saying “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Trusting the Lord as our protector won’t always change our external circumstances, but it will bring peace to our hearts.
pausing to bless the lord
Pause and take a moment to thank the Lord for His faithfulness in your life. As Psalm 34:1 states, “Bless the Lord at all times.” What can you bless the Lord for in this moment?
Lord, remind me of Your nearness to me. Help me fix my heart on You
rather than the circumstances around me. Thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Amen.
