SINGING STRENGTHENS MY FAITH

There are many reasons to worship and to sing, for me personally one reason I love to sing is because it strengthens my faith.

I might walk into a worship service or a prayer time feeling discouraged and beat down, but as I set my heart on God and lift my voice in song, something in me changes. When I’m singing, my emotions don’t rule over my heart, the words I’m declaring do.

I think the Psalmist understood this in Psalm 42 when he said “Why are you cast down O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him.” So often I have to remind my soul to hope in God. I do this best when I sing.

This has not looked like a stage or microphone, lights or fame. It has been songs mixed with tears and an old plastic keyboard in the back room of my house in college. It has been homemade choruses written in the car after a long, hard day at work. It has been whispers of songs in crowded rooms when nobody hears me singing except myself and God.

No matter where, or when, how loud or soft, singing has the ability to change your perspective and give your heart faith. Whether overcoming fear, or loneliness, depression or great loss, singing has the ability to make the truth louder than the pain and unbelief. God meets us in the singing and His truth reaches the places in us that we need Him most. This is why I sing.
